Dallas is just one of five NFL teams whose leading tackler is a safety (Donovan Wilson). Without winning in the trenches, the linebackers can get washed out, causing the defense to be more susceptible to big runs. One of the problems with the Cowboys' rushing defense is that they lose at the point of attack and allow blockers to climb into the second level and take out the linebackers. That includes last year and their historically bad 2020 season. In fact, if you look at the past 20 seasons of the Cowboys, you’d find that their two worst years in terms of rushing attempts allowed have come in the past three seasons. Teams don’t want to be in situations where the Cowboys' pass rush can just pin their ears back and attack them, so they counter this as much as they can by running early and often against them. As fantastic as this team has been on defense (first in takeaways, third in sacks, and fifth in points allowed), they are just average at defending the run, so opposing teams wisely try to exploit the weaker part of their defense. Teams that can’t defend the run experience higher volumes of rushing attempts against them.īut again, the Cowboys aren’t terrible at stopping the run. The Seattle Seahawks were the only team who faced more rushing attempts that didn’t have a losing record last year however, their defense did surrender the third-most rushing yards in the league last season. Opposing teams ran against Dallas an average of 29.2 times per game last season, which is seventh-most in the NFL. The problem is that teams are frequently running against them. They allow 4.4 yards per play, which ranks them right smack in the middle of the league. On a per-play basis, they aren’t terrible. You see, the Cowboys have what you might call a “run defense” problem. In fact, you could even say that this team had a plan, and they executed it quite well. Instead, they continued to select players that will help their football team. But the Cowboys stayed true to form and didn’t force picks. Considering this team already had one of the best defensive units in the league combined with the struggles they had at times on offense, it seemed a little bit off-script to go that direction. In fact, they remained undefeated, winning the NFC West championship and divisional playoffs. The Dallas Cowboys surprised everyone by picking defensive players with three of their first four draft picks. We welcomed and blessed the mask at a one-of-a-kind press event on November 18, 2014-which just happens to be the turning point in the Seattle Seahawks season. “We are filling in the gaps in the mask’s history.” Ernst lived in Sedona, Arizona, in the 1940s-suggesting an opportunity for his acquisition of the mask. “We knew it was made at the north end of Vancouver Island in the 19th century, but we didn’t know anything else until it came in to the Max Ernst collection,” said Kathryn Bunn-Marcuse, Assistant Director of the Burke Museum’s Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Native Art. They also collected objects from Plains and Alaskan tribes, which offers a possible explanation for how the mask came to be part of the Company collection. The Company’s collectors traveled throughout the Southwest, California and along the Colorado River buying art for the marketplaces. in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. The mask bore an undeniable resemblance to the 1976 logo the Seahawks later unearthed a 1975 Seattle PI article in their archives, in which Seahawks General Manager John Thompson identified the mask as THE definitive inspiration for the Hawks’ logo.Ī tag in the mask dated 1910 includes a catalog number from the Fred Harvey Company, which operated hotels, restaurants, and Indian marketplaces throughout the southwestern U.S. When Wright broached the subject with Curator Emeritus Bill Holm, he pointed her to a photograph of a Kwakwaka’wakw (pronounced: KWA-kwuh-kyuh-wakw) eagle mask in Robert Bruce Inverarity’s 1950 survey, Art of the Northwest Coast Indians. Wright’s art history students were curious about the design influence for the Seattle Seahawks’ original logo. In the lead-up to last year’s Super Bowl, Burke Museum Curator of Native American Art Robin K. What a year it has been! Now, as the Seahawks prepare to "re-Pete" their visit to the Super Bowl, here’s what we’ve learned so far about the mask that inspired the logo. It’s been one year since we first explored the connection between a Native mask from the Pacific Northwest and the original Seattle Seahawks logo.
